Hello! I’m Jennifer Rash, an independent designer who works directly with companies that have complex, high-value products and services. I am a go-to source for creating strategically-focused print and digital communications.
Why work with an independent designer?
Many companies with internal design teams have a series of challenges:
Internal design can have a high cost. Salary and benefits can range from $60,000 - $100,000 per employee, per year. That isn’t accounting for time or investment required to hire and manage.
Sometimes an internal design team doesn’t have enough to do. Staffing costs remain constant, while work fluctuates.
Sometimes internal design staff are overworked, and your urgent project can be delayed, sitting at the end of a long to-do list.
Internal design staff can lack curiosity. Internal teams are sometimes complacent, and not overly excited to learn about your challenge, and offer strategic solutions. They may need you to give them a set of orders to follow, when what you need is someone to bring you ideas.
What are some alternatives?
You can work with an agency.
The advantage of this can be top notch design work, strategic thinking, and fast turnaround. However, this usually comes with a substantial price tag. Agencies have high overhead, due to the costs of maintaining a large staff, workspace, and extensive hardware and software.
You can find off-the-shelf or low-cost solutions.
There couldn’t be a better time to find an inexpensive designer. You have many options for low-cost hired guns (think 99 designs, Fiverrr, etc.). There are even completely automated SAS solutions that will generate graphics and templates for you. It’s a magical time! But...you will most likely be working with order takers. They may create work that looks good, but the onus will be on you to generate the ideas and strategy behind the design. This goes doubly for the SAS solutions. It’s all on you.
You can work with an independent designer.
Pros: quality design work, strategic thinking, and compressed timelines, without the agency price tag. Also, curiosity. Guaranteed that if we work together, I will be enthusiastically curious about your business and goals, and will be looking for opportunities to best advise you from a design strategy perspective. I’m always learning, and will be looking to add new tools and knowledge to the mix to arrive at a better solution.
Independent designers won’t be the cheapest option, but the most expensive option will be late, low quality, strategy-free design.
